Found in a Food Storage Locker While Camping!
When you place your food in the camping storage locker at night, you expect it to be safe. At Pt. Reyes National Park, 45 minutes north of San Francisco, my friends experienced quite the opposite.
The rangers give you plenty of warning about the animals in the park, including raccoons, skunks and mice. It is advised that you place your food in these lockers at all times. They also mention to cover any holes in the locker with heavy rocks. So some friends of mine rolled into camp late on a Friday night, set up their tent, placed their food in an EMPTY food locker and each slipped into their down sleeping bag. They woke up the next morning and went to grab breakfeast when they found this in the corner of the storage box. It appeared that a rodent made its way into the locker, built herself a nice little bed, and had her babies. Mind you that the boxes at Pt. Reyes are made of metal.
Needless to say, it was a surprise to my friends and luckily the animal didn’t eat all their food for the rest of the trip. This is something to learn from and be prepared for in the future. Look for any holes or possible entry points that animals can use to steal your food. Bring duct tape to seal possible holes and maybe your food will be safe for the night.
